Transformation
I am writing a section in my major project right now about transformation ministry, also known as “Twelve Step Recovery Ministry.” The twelve steps are deeply supportive because when followed in community and with a sponsor they prepare an individual for the power and will of God to transform their thinking. When thinking is transformed the rest of the person tends to follow.
Hebrews opens with a Prologue—an introduction—that is traditionally understood as the first four verses of chapter 1 (Heb. 1:1-4). The author places Son of God in the responsible position of our receiving the transformative change we are so thirsty for when we decide to give our life and our will to the care of God (Principle 3). From your Bible you know that the divine Son is the second person of the Trinity, and the Person of the Trinity who becomes the Incarnate Son, Jesus Christ.
In verse 1, God spoke to “our ancestors”—the prophets. This is what God did.
In verse 2, God turns over the task of “speaking” to us, to his Son—whom he (God, aka The Trinity) appointed as heir and created the universe through. The main subject in verse one is God and beginning in verse two the main subject becomes the Son of God, the Incarnate Christ.
Hebrews 1:1–2 (CSB)
1 Long ago God spoke to our ancestors by the prophets at different times and in different ways. 2 In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him.
The interplay between God and Son of God as the main subject in these two verses is alone enough to clarify who the supreme author of creation is, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He came as the Incarnation to teach about the coming Kingdom and is therefore our higher power in Celebrate Recovery. Willingness to receive his teaching is a simple attribute that leads to success in transformation ministry (12-step recovery ministry) as we “submit to every change God wants to make in our lives and humbly ask him to remove our character defects” [Principle 5]. God, through his Son, can do great things in our lives when we are willing to receive his wisdom. (Rom. 12: 1–2).
