The First Born, Son of God
There is a popular Christian worship song that lifts up Christ as Lord in the chorus, stating “nothing is better than you!” The author of Hebrews could have written that song—or at least had influence on it—in the message of chapter 1 vs. 5-14. In the opening chapter of Hebrews Jesus Christ is lifted up as “better” than the angels—the angels are beings that are agents of God which God created—and that exist “higher” than humanity.
In a series of Old Testament quotes the author illustrates Jesus as the “Son of God” (v. 5), “first born” and “worshiped by angels” (v. 6); Jesus is “above justice” and “beyond companions” (vs. 8-9); the “establisher of earth” (v. 10), and the creator of the heavens (v. 10). Jesus Christ—Son of God—is immutable and impassible (v. 11, 12), meaning he is the same yesterday, today, and into the future with an unchanging, and unchangeable love and will for his creation.
Hebrews 1:10–12 (CSB)
10 And: In the beginning, Lord, you established the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands; 11 they will perish, but you remain. They will all wear out like clothing; 12 you will roll them up like a cloak, and they will be changed like clothing. But you are the same, and your years will never end.
Jesus Christ is the one and only, true, higher power at Celebrate Recovery, and the author of Hebrews fortifies his status as God with the power to help us recover. Our lesson series on Monday nights turns to Principle 7 this month. Spending time with our God daily in self-examination, Bible reading, and prayer is an important part of recovering His image in our lives. Come visit on a Monday for a good meal, good teaching, and a great community of support.
