Continuing to Overcome

Continuing in Revelation the first church revealed is the one in Ephesus. Jesus knows it well for its “works, labor, and endurance” (Rev 2:2). This church has been faithful in action, testing all those who claim to be original carriers of God’s word (apostles), tolerant of evil people, and willing to endure hardship for the name of Jesus (Rev 2:2-3).

The problem in Ephesus is they “abandoned their first love” (Rev 2:4), meaning they no longer were witnessing to the world with the enthusiasm they once did. Oh, how we can relate to this in recovery. The excitement of a new life, new relationships, and renewal of feelings for the people in our lives in early recovery can run thin as working the steps continues and we become “seasoned” in our recoveries.

Revelation 2:7 (NASB95)

7 ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.’

In the words of Christ to the church in Ephesus, rely on the Spirit and continue to “overcome”! Do the work you are responsible for in recovery, but don’t miss an opportunity to glorify God.

Continue to witness the One who brought you to the change in your life. The battle Christ is fighting for you is known by your testimony. What is being done inside you is known through your involvement in church and in our Celebrate Recovery community.

Recovery is filled with hard “works, labor, and endurance” that you have been prepared for. Don’t hesitate to give Jesus the glory for bringing you this new life.
